This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for September 15, 2008:
After my sister was in a car accident, they put a shunt in her head. My mother just sat there real quiet-like and said, your dad had one. When my dad was about 16 he was in a car accident and lost one of his legs (this was before penicillin). He was still unconscious and they took him from Traverse City to the hospital in Ann Arbor at U of M. A doctor from some place in Europe insisted he have a shunt. It was not widely used at the time. The other doctors were appalled. My grandmother agreed to the proceedure. My dad lived, learned to walk with a wooden leg and went on to become the newspaper writer/photographer he had always dreamed of becoming.

Help

Very uplifting story :)
But… what happened to your sister in the long run?
Thanks for the concern. Here's a few more details. I was named for the strong grandmother who pulled my Dad through his crisis. By the time my sisterhad her accident, however, my Dad had alzheimers. My mom took care of him until his peaceful death in'01. My other sister put ther life on hold to help nurse my sister back to health. She is well today, although she does not walk well and has problem with one hand. Her two sons, who were teenagers at the time have grown up and become ministers. She always says that she is glad she is not the person she was before the accident, because she has learned to slow down and trust in God. Thanks for your concern!!!
Powerful story. It made me stop and think about how precious (and precarious) life can be.
Yes at Otter says: powerful story.
I am glad you provided more detail about your family
